UDL

When I was first exposed to UDL, I chuckled.  Embedded within the concept of special education are the same principles of UDL.  In essence, we identify the current level of performance for our students, identify key areas of concern, develop multiple modes of instruction, provide guided and independent practice, and assess the outcomes.  I also see similarities between the RtI and UDL.  RtI uses a continuum to identify struggling learners and those who are accelerating; ultimately providing a continuum of services of all students.  UDL is designed to provide appropriate lessons for all students, force teachers to analyze their lessons, and to develop appropriate assessments.  In comparison, special education and RtI are utilized when an issue with learning is identified.  UDL is a daily way of prepairing for all of the learning styles of the students within your class.
